Avocado

Avocado toxicity in pets

Avocado
substance: Persin
Avocados can be harmful to pets, especially in large amounts. While dogs and cats are less sensitive to persin than animals like birds and rabbits, the high-fat content can cause gastrointestinal upset or pancreatitis. Ingesting the pit may also lead to an intestinal blockage in dogs.

Persin mechanism of action is unknown.

  • Gastrointestinal: vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort.

  • The avocado pit poses a choking hazard or can cause an intestinal blockage!

Treat possible GI disorders like pancreatitis.

If the pit was ingested, emesis (for recent ingestion), gastroscopy, or surgical treatment may be necessary.

If your pet shows signs of avocado toxicity or has swallowed a pit, seek veterinary assistance immediately.
